What are the Different Types of Tents?
For years tents were seen as a complicated mess of rods, cords and stakes. They were cumbersome, taking up room that could otherwise be used for food and other essential items. However, recent improvements in technology have made tents easy to carry and deploy, taking no more than a few minutes to set up correctly.
• Basic Ridge tents are small tents, usually constructed for 1-2 people. They look the most like a traditional tent, offering reliable protection but with limited headspace to move around.
• Dome tents are very common, coming in a range of sizes that can fit 4+ people.
• Geodesic tents combat the extreme weather conditions, particularly windy environments and are the perfect alternative where most tents won’t suffice. Each pole crosses over the tent to form triangles, distributing stress across the whole structure for optimal stability.
• Instant quick-pitch tents are relatively new. Rather than assembling rods and threading them through a tent, quick-pitch tents consist of the single coiled frame running through the body of the tent. When unstrapped, the tent automatically unfolds.
• Tunnel tents are the most common type of family tent and are ideal for large groups of people. Particular tunnel tents include 15-man tent models for large excursions.
• Vis-à-vis tents are comprised of the main chamber and two adjoining rooms that face each other, hence the name “face-to-face.”
• Large family tents range from odd-sized dome tents to big tents and compartmentalised teepees. While offering room for large groups of people, family tents aren’t suitable for windy conditions.
