My only issue was that when I tried to check emails, something I almost never do on my mobile, I had to be quite aggressive with the keyboard, so would recommend checking that first, and exchanging if it is not good. I did not see this in time, and have no patience with returning for 'repair'.
This phone runs the latest Android Oreo 8.2. On top of that is Huawei's Emotion User interface EMUI 8.2. Again this UI has far more tweaks than the normal Android/Google UI. Battery is 3750 mAh, and that capacity is larger than many contemporary phones in this price bracket.
It has all the usual Comms, but also NFC, essential as I use Google Pay.
The fingerprint scanner is on the back, and is lightning quick. It unlocks the screen so fast, it's unbelievable.
It has excellent dual camera lenses that take brilliant photos. The sim tray is not hybrid type but a full one with 3 slots, for 2 sims and a micro-sd card. It has very nice glass body, and the package includes a nice transparent case, whilst the phone screen has a pre-installed screen protector.
This phone has every thing that I want and more. It's a bargain at this price tag, and frankly it shames the prevalent exorbitant phones in the market with its specs, attractive body design, and an excellent refined performance at this price.
The screen is great, not as big as I was expecting width wise but easily big enough. The notch is there, whether you like them or hate them and yes you can turn it off but this just places a black bar along the top to hide it, the notifications are still there in the same place, they don't move down and it does get cramped up there, I do find it hard to read anything in the bar as it writing is so small. With it being so cramped I do wonder why Honor feel the need to tell me that my NFC is turned on and that I have headphones plugged in. I know these things, please let me clear the icons out. The bezel is very thin with maybe 3 or 4mm at the chin but even that is barely noticeable.
At the other end of the screen is the nav bar which despite the bezel of the phone being black insists on being white when you are in an app so you have a dark coloured app, a black bezel and in between them this white nav bar which stands out like a sore thumb at least there is an option to hide it.
Out of the box you do get a glass screen protector (applied) and a clear silicone case to protect the phone.
Performance wise, in the types of app I use, I have had no problems with no wait between swithing apps, I do not really do games so cannot comment on perfomance of games so much. Most apps seem to open from cold in a couple of seconds and switching between running apps is near instant.
Sound quality through wired headphones is the best I have heard from any phone and is really good without any signal processing enabled, through the internal speaker, the same cannot be said but as I don't listen to music or watch videos with the internal speaker this isn't an issue. Bluetooth audio quality is more a function of the headphones/receiver than the phone. I did find however that with my previous car the bluetooth audio would often be very broken, so there was some incompatability between the two (a Sony DSXA410BT which I had brought because it was cheap when the previous stereo died and I knew I was replacing the car soon). With my new car the problem does not seem to exist.
When using NFC to pay with Android pay, I find it only needs to be placed within 5 - 10cm of the terminal to work, and have had issues when placing it right next to the terminal as the terminal had already detected it but the movement as it came closer confused it.
The biggest downside though is EMUI which is Huawei's skin they put on Android and it is ugly. You can mitigate some of this by changing the launcher and using another icon pack which I have done but you still get to see EMUI when you go into things like settings (which seems to spawn a process for every different section you visit) and things don't work quite the way you expect after coming from stock Android.
There is plenty enough storage (64gb) which is much better than my previous 16gb. 4gb ram and the Kirin 710 chip are good, but of course there could be better. The camera can produce extremely vibrant images, and night mode is pretty decent. However it's not amazing.
However, all of this issues are made basically redundant when you consider this phone is just over £200, and a phone with these features improved are at list 2-3 times higher cost. It has all the basic features of a phone at the flagship price range but comes in at a budget price. Simply this phone is superb and I couldn't be happier I got it.
It is easy to set up, the user interface is very good, there's lots of storage space (particularly when you can add a 128gB card!) , has a brilliant camera, a long battery life (easily gets me through the day) and, finally, a brilliant touch screen. Only slight niggle is it's very easy to touch the 'application off switch' when you're typing and go for the space bar. Otherwise, no complaints at all!
