All in all a great phone at a sensible price for a phone with this amount of features, works out a good price if you buy handset and then get a sim only deal.
Pros:
1. PERFORMANCE is one of the best because of the Kirin 970 chipset (SoC) so you shouldn't worry about not being able to run intensive tasks.
2. SCREEN is huge and is very sharp
3. BUILD QUALITYfrom the metal is nice and comfy (silicon case is included which protects the metal from easily denting)
4. FINGERPRINT SCANNER is very fast, almost instant.
5. SELFIE CAMERA is great for the price and beats my old LG G5 (flagship device) , which is more expensive of a phone.
6. VIDEO STABILISATION (EIS) is the best in its class, very good
7. BATTERY LIFE & CHARGING SPEED is incredible. I can last for at least 7 hrs of 'screen on time' (not standby) heavy use (Lots of gaming). The Charger provided is 18W which is higher compared to IPhones which only come with 5W chargers, so the charging goes from 10% to 80% in 1hr. Which is very fast considering the huge 3750 mAh battery.
8. STILL Photos are okay, don't expect flagship camera performance. But if you choose the 'Night' mode then low light pictures are much better but you need a tripod or something to keep the phone completly still or else the image will be blurry.
9. SOFTWARE, well, when it comes to this it really is just a bias because you either hate the EMUI (software skin) or love it. For me however, it is one of the better software skins. It just gets the job done.
Cons:
The camera in video has terrible amounts of noise in lower light and artifical lighting conditions, so a lot of light is recommended for usable footage.
Verdict: Performance and overall user experience is fast and is outstanding at times, but where the phone falls flat is camera performance, so if you can compromise for less camera quality then go ahead and buy this phone.
First things first, the phone has a very classic metal feel, it does feel heavy but in a strong sturdy way (I haven't attempted to drop it), my immediate practice with any new phone is to slap on a tempered glass screen protector (A standard film protector is already applied to the phone) and wrap it in a case (Already provided in the box). The phone is big slightly smaller than my OnePlus 6 with a tiny chin with Honor branding on the front. The back looks all neat. The bottom has a headphone jack, speaker which is loud and a USB-C port.
Powering on the screen seems very bright and you are taken through the initial setup, which was quick and easy. If you're already an Android user porting your apps and details is fairly painless. Once into the homescreen some adjustments are needed, the interface is different to my OnePlus 6 with a iPhone layout of just apps on your homescreen that can look daughting at first but you can change this in settings or install a different launcher.
Using the Honor Play as a day to day phone seems to be fairly positive the battery life is incredible, I say this having my general notifications going and my Google Fit tracking going I managed to use only 25% battery from 8:30 in the morning until 19:00. Putting the phone into airplane mode in the evening it got me to the end of a 2nd day perfectly.
The one thing I do need to touch on is the camera, I had read the reviews that seemed to knock the Honor Play and said that photography wasn't its strength, this might be the case but the day and night shots I took on the Honor Play compared to my OnePlus 6 are more vivid and just look better (hopefully the attachments have worked and you can see this). You can also enable a Quick Photo mode, by enabling you to double press the power button quickly it will take a snap from an off state, the only issue is you don't know exactly what it has captured until afterwards and I found that the majority of pictures seemed out of focus. The front facing camera does a good job although it did seem soft as the focus is fixed, this is great for the Instagram crowd and it has a number of different lighting effects that seem to do a good job.
Additionally the phone supports facial unlock, finger print and pin you can also enable a glove mode so you can use standard gloves to tap and swipe, it does make the screen more sensitive in general but it's a welcome addition especially when it's cold. Simply hold the phone up as if you are looking at it and it will turn on the screen and away you go.
Performance seemed smooth, every now and then it would skip if I was running a game and then swapping to Whatsapp or a browser session, it never impacted the experience just ocassionally felt like it disrupted the flow slightly. But this is a minor niggle, games played great, apps opened super fast, some faster than my OnePlus 6 and I can't work out why but this is a high end processor in a affordable mid price point.
Overall I am incredibly impressed and am now an Honor converted fan.
