Extension Ladder Safety Warning
on 7 August 2016
I have not used this on the roof yet. I tried it on flat ground and realised there is a potential danger when used with my extension ladder. This is not a fault with the hook kit but with how the extension ladder works. When most extension ladders are extended, the ladder hooks (the ones that are part of the ladder and not the Hook Kit) that hold the top section up, remain engaged because the weight of the person is pushing down whereas the ground is fixed (pushing up against the weight of the person). These opposing forces hold the ladder hooks closed together. However, when used with the Roof Hook Kit on a roof, the top of the ladder is fixed at the roof ridge (pulling up against the weight of the person). As the person puts their foot on the bottom rung of the bottom section, the weight of the person is pushing down. The forces in play are trying to pull the two parts of the ladder apart and it is possible that the bottom section of the ladder could slide out and fall to the ground with the person on it.
