Bought one of these as the media disk in my MythBuntu HTPC and had no end of problems.
Finally tracked it down to the disk failing whenever it was being read at max speed. MythBuntu allows you to flag commercials so that on playback they are skipped. To do this it reads the video file and stores in- and out-points in its database. This means reading the, often quite large, video files wuthout decoding them for display (playback was fine). This killed the disk causing disk I/O errors.
I was supplied a replacement with a Maxtor badge (Seagate bought Maxtor, so they are actually the exact same drive with a different sticker) and the new one works perfectly. It's fast enough to record multiple video streams while playing back another. I only wish it had a bigger capacity :-)
