Software coding then testing is my life:

At some point some manager will come by me and my team and interrupt us with "hey - so how is the quality of the application? Got many bugs?"
"Its all good!" I reply "in fact its the best quality".
"But how do you know?" he says.
"well" I sigh "me and my team learned all there is to know about quality. You see it's all here in this handy book"
I pass him the book I keep on my desk. It's always ready and waiting. Then hopefully someone chimes in reassuringly, "Yeah. Thats the best book about quality there is. We have all read it. Its the best and greatest. A very famous book"
"Yep, It's a great read about a guy maintaining his bike while driving it across the USA with his son explaining the concepts of quality.
"Yes, when you finish it you will understand all there is to producing quality code, quality applications, quality testing..." says someone else.
"You need to read it to understand where we are coming from" - I say backing them all up "Here borrow my copy."
"Oh right, I'll read it then" he says carefully examining the copy.
"Let me know when you finish it", I say "Then come back to us"
"Bye then!"

I have had to buy several copies over the years but, boy does it shut them up! Nobody ever came back to me. Nobody ever finished this book that I gave them. Instead the secret of quality is safe with Robert M Pirsig and this book. See how far you get into it before abandoning it...

I’ve wanted to read this for over 20years and am not disappointed. Some of the philosophical bits are a little tricky to get your head around, and retain ie the philosophies of certain greats like Kant, and I studied Psychology, which included some philosophy! Love Pirsig’s narrative of his journey and made me want to get a bike and travel! Really enjoying reading this. It came in excellent new condition.

I wasn’t entirely sure what the book was about or where it was going when I started it so I’ll give you a little synopsis (with out revealing anything)… it follows the protagonist and his son as they travel across parts of America on a motorcycle. Along the way he ponders ideas and theories in great detail. Slowly you learn more about his past…. This is really about it. But if you are interested in philosophy then the book is definitely worth reading, as his ideas are very thought out and interesting.

If you are interested in philosophy set against the backdrop of a road trip across the United States on a motorcycle then this is the book for you! It is a classic. Very moving story given the amount of autobiographical material.

Loved this book when I read it over 30 years ago in paper form and so I am looking forward to refreshing my reading of it in Kindle format

This book has been in my top5 since I first read it back in the 80's. I returned to it this year with my kindle and enjoyed every minute. It's a book that makes you think, and I like that. Some might see it as a challenging read but it's well worth the effort. I'm an engineer who cares about technical things and I dabble in creative arts. The book resonates with me.

One of my all time favourite reads. Deep as they go and a stunning journey. Gets heavy around the conversations of quality - the crux of the story. Gripped me until the end and inspired me in so many ways.
