"I got my money's worth!" - by John Kouhia
With some experience in oil painting but little experience in watercolor, I wanted a guide that would competently cover most of the basic techniques and aesthetic issues about how to make a painting work - in watercolor. It exceeded my expectations. It's comprehensive and written in clear language. It avoids flashy stunts and trickery - it calls for just plain hard work, focus and presence of mind. Now to find the time and the good weather to put its principles into practice. I got my money's worth!

"Happy to recommend" - by K. Platt (Sheffield, England)
What a pleasure this book is. The kind that makes you want to pick up your paints and create a painting. This book helps you to master traditional watercolour skills to create watercolours with atmosphere. This course in a book gives tips on painting both indoors and out, painting from photographs, sketching, washes and a lot more. There are 5 step-by-step projects to practise your skills. This 144 page book is longer than many on the subject. It is filled with wonderful examples of watercolour. My only niggle is was the printing colour too dark or is this the real colour of the originals? They do look a little dull, which is a shame as the artist captures the light beautifully. Wonderful book.

"Good book for the price." - by Pete Reeves
Direct information and a practical guide to some techniques which I found very useful as a beginner in watercolor. Quite a short book, but packed with beautiful demonstration pieces. Recommended.

"Excellent book!" - by Heather Norrison (UK)
As a newcomer to painting I am finding this book very helpful, it is clearly laid out and easy to understand. The step by step exercises are an excellent way to learn techniques and see how to make a painting come alive, and the quick reference section showing how to achieve different effects is really useful. I'm working my way through it doing each exercise and am sure when I reach the end I'll be much wiser (and not too much older!)

"I am not happy sitting on the side of the road" - by Mrs J D Horner
This is the most helpful book I have read about painting landscapes from photographs, which I do. I am not happy sitting on the side of the road, so I always work from my own photographs. This give so many great ideas from an experienced artist who shares how and why he leaves things out, changes colours and even seasons successfully. Lots of helpful techniques shared for us all to use.

"Incredible Book" - by Pink Frog (England)
I agree whole heartedly with W.S. Trotter's review. This is the best book I've read with regards to portrait painting. It is so good, it's inspired me to have a go at painting a portrait, and this is something I've never been particularly interested in trying before...

Mary's Whyte's portraits are simply stunning. In fact, I find them quite breath taking. I came across Mary's work quite by accident on the Internet. It stopped me in my mouse tracks and made me go wow!

The book is roughly A4 portrait format and contains 160 pages, most of which include lots of examples of Mary's incredible paintings, printed on high quality paper. There is an introduction and nine chapters.

What is most striking about Mary's work is her ability to really capture the emotion of her subjects. Mary is passionate about her subjects and this really comes across in both her beautiful work and ... full review

"The basics for advenced minds." - by Vieira Painter (Portugal)
Why 5 stars? Because I get from Edgar Whitney teachings the most important for me, at this point of my artistic life, that is the explanation of principles and elements of design and the aesthtic philosophy underlying great paintings. That's the emphasis I'm looking for in this book and its all there. I was lucky to read, at the same time, the Ron Ranson book «Learn watefcolor the Edgar Whitney way» (1994), because it explains and Synthesizes the core Whitneys teachings. This last reimpression has a few color plates wich are great!

"Refresher" - by Richard Bell (West Yorkshire)
This made perfect holiday reading, a short refresher course in watercolour and one that I'll dip into again.
It's almost exclusively pen and ink and watercolour, punkish and streetwise, rather than the wistful rural tradition of Cotman and Beatrix Potter but the techniques and the way colours behave are still the same and Scheinberger goes through them briskly and thoroughly.
Worth reading if you think you might be getting set in your ways with watercolour because, whether you agree or disagree with Scheinberger's conclusions, it does make you consider every aspect of watercolours that you can think of and several that probably never occurred to you. For instance I like the way he champions indigo and Naples yellow; colours which have apparent disadvantages that he suggests can be turned to your advantage. Must try them.
As an illustrator, I like the way he touches on page design, developing ideas and the question of ... full review

"Highly recommended, kindle version" - by Victoria
I resorted to ordering the Kindle edition because the paperback never seemed to come into stock. I was a little worried about how well it would work as a digital book. It is great! If like me you can't wait for the paperback, go for it! I am viewing on an iPad, and the images are beautifully clear and in full colour.
Now to the book itself. I am on about day 10 so have not completed the whole book, but I am loving it so far. The exercises are fun, easy to follow, and I am learning so much. It is really helping me add to my knowledge of watercolour, giving me ideas for my own work, and also helping me refine my own style according the the techniques and results I like best, and find fun to do. One of my favourite art books. Sometimes art books have so ... full review

"A colourful happy art book x" - by Nessa Thompson (Portsmouth)
A Colourful and happy book of great flower creations that you can all do with the inspiration of
Lynn Whipple the author of Expressive Flower Painting: Simple Mixed Media Techniques for Bold Beautiful Blooms.
I found this book bright and cheerful throughout. This book had in-depth information, photo's and expansion of Lynn's class called Big Bold Bloom Wild Painting. Which was brilliantly covered on mark making, layering techniques, how to do "spin drawings," colour methods, painted backgrounds, working from life, and how to successfully combine a wide variety of media for the maximum effect.
I found this book no limits to what you can do just start with just a scribble on a piece of paper etc and then create your own fun flower master piece with simple material you may have at home or you can pick up in your local shops.
This book will be used in my art and texture ... full review
