"A well writen book" - by JALJ
Although not a beginner, this book is clear to understand.

The demonstrations were concise and to the point.

The sheets of 'ready' drawn sketches really helped.

"Great for adults too...." - by coddie2
Never mind the kids.... i am in my 50s and bought it for myself and love it! The quality of the paints and the paper is really top. I sat for ages just doodling with the exercises they set for you. The casual language of the book is very suitable for any age. Its great for getting a feel for textures and colours and composition before you embark on the real thing. It has really got me started and enthused as i have always had a barrier about starting on an empty page. Just goes to show to don’t need to spend a shedload of money on equipment. Might be improved even more if they had a variety of paper textures to play with too.

"I got my money's worth!" - by John Kouhia
With some experience in oil painting but little experience in watercolor, I wanted a guide that would competently cover most of the basic techniques and aesthetic issues about how to make a painting work - in watercolor. It exceeded my expectations. It's comprehensive and written in clear language. It avoids flashy stunts and trickery - it calls for just plain hard work, focus and presence of mind. Now to find the time and the good weather to put its principles into practice. I got my money's worth!

"A gentle structured approach to watercolours" - by Marand (Warwickshire, UK)
This is a well thought out guide to developing watercolour painting skills. The aim is to take one guided exercise everyday, each one building a particular skill - starting with basic shapes, then looking at things like the effects of light, hue, perspective, creating volume and depth. Each day's exercise takes between 40 minutes and an hour so it isn't an arduous or time-consuming programme to follow. The final week involves combining the techniques that you have learned into a painting. This section didn't really resonate with me - it is based on desert landscapes and jungle. Whilst my interest lies in landscape painting, I live in the rolling hills and green landscapes of the Cotswolds. Nonetheless this is an inviting book to encourage you to develop your skills from a zero or low base. Will your work be perfect after thirty days? Almost certainly not, but I think the ... full review

"Terrific all-round watercolor instruction. Straight to the point." - by ParisBreakfast (NYC)
I'm loving this book. Lots of terrific watercolor tips and exercises. Very basic starting at aquare 1 with thumbnails and value sketches and working up from there. Her demos give precise instruction though I would have loved to see brush on paper shots of how she does those lush skies. Sometimes I found the pre-finish art preferable, simpler than the finish but that's personal. Photos of different ways to hold the brush are terrific! And a nice simple, basic color palette anyone can learn from using. An Excellent book IMHO.
