"Fantastic" - by Amazon Customer
The Trump era has forced many of us to consider what America is, and to do so a history is required. This book superbly condenses those great moments of American history to offer an insight as to why we have arrived at such a perilous place.

"This is a great book. The opening chapter sets the scene of ..." - by bluenile
This is a great book. The opening chapter sets the scene of how the book is going to see American history through different lens. We are so used to the story being told from the perspective of middle class white Europeans/settlers/colonialist, we forget how they colonised it. Of course, from their perspective it is often told as a story of adventure, conquering nature and furthering man's advancement to the new world - a land for the free. Rarely are we reminded that white Europeans 'conquered' that land though BRUTAL violence and repression of Native Americans, African Americans and working class people. (The same as other nations they are quick to point fingers to). This is a reminder of how, when we look at issues/stories from different people, we see and hear different things. Howard Zinn, thank you and you are missed.

"Very good introduction to this mythic man" - by Dr Jacques COULARDEAU (OLLIERGUES France)
A simple book about the 16th US president, probably the most famous president after George Washington, the 1st president just after the revolution, that explains, without exposing, some aspects of Lincoln’s life.

You will be interested in the chapters about his parents, about his young life as the son a his father and stepmother, working up to the age of 21 for them more than for himself; not getting the education he wanted; and yet taking the final decision of leaving his family and living his own life at the age of 22. The mention of Indians in his life and in the life of his grandparents and father is marginal but it definitely contains the second basic contradiction of the USA and Lincoln. The first one was slavery and he was clearly against it though it was not his political objective to emancipate slaves. The second is of course the ... full review

"Spot on!" - by Jim H (Peterborough, UK)
I'm not a historian and I'm not an American, but I thought the book first rate: well written, interesting all the way through and delightfully short. I learned a lot. Spot on. However it did leave me wanting more. I am at present re-reading a book that shows how the mishandling of many important matters after the end of WW1 took us almost inevitably to WW2. Naturally Woodrow Wilson was important in all this. He had all the right ideas but sadly the European leaders ignored him. I think I really need to get hold of a much bigger biography and then read just the chapters on 1917 to 1919. But that is good, isn't it? - a book that makes you want to know more is truly educational.

"A dark comedy of obsession" - by CJ Barnes (Southampton, UK)
For whatever reason you have happened here, I urge you to read this first novel. It's a quirky, clever, dark comedy of provincial manners, obsession and sexual betrayal. It's told by three protagonists, friends and lovers when they were young, who invite us to sift through their longing, posturing, doubt and self justification to arrive at our own assessment of what really happened between them when they were young in the eighties in a Norfolk seaside town. It's both a detective story of sorts and a reflection on social values; a kind of bitter Le Grand Meaulnes, with a disturbing aftertaste that lingers long after the last page.
