"This is very readable and amusing." - by Patrick Patton
An excellent bedside book, great fun. It made me wish I had read the official biography.

Excellent research which has been written up in a very readable style. A page turner. Clear and factural. I especially value that the author did not revert to writing imagined conversation between the characters. What she does not know she doesn't invert. I highly recommend this book!

"Or maybe the sons..." - by FictionFan (Kirkintilloch, Scotland)
The Winter Queen of the title is Elizabeth, daughter of James VI of Scotland, later James I of England, and herself briefly Queen of Bohemia, through her marriage to Frederick, also known as the Palatinate. Elizabeth and Frederick produced an alarming number of children, the majority of whom lived into adulthood, and as their sons and daughters grew up and contracted marriages or made alliances, they spread their influence throughout the ruling families of 17th century Europe, thus being involved in all the major events (aka wars) of that turbulent period. The book is ostensibly about the four daughters who survived their childhood years – Elizabeth, Louise Hollandine, Henrietta Maria, and Sophia.

But in fact, the book is much more about the kings and sons than it is about queens and daughters. This is completely understandable since, at that period as in so much of history, women generally played a very ... full review

"A Tragic Mary" - by Dr Barry Clayton (UK)
Mary was a real woman. Elizabeth was a cold, robotic Queen. There are better biographies of Mary but none capture her femininity like this one.

The charges against her were bogus. Being a catholic was the crime. The author has written a clever, witty and engaging account of Queen who loved finery and whose life was peppered with misfortune and betrayal. Her life was full of dramaa and tragedy but also of great fun.

This is not as good as Guy's biography but what Williams does is show how gender shaped Mary"s life.

A pacey and xophisticated analysis.

"i'd highly recomend this book to anybody who wants to learn about Mary's life and reign as it gives a nice even spread of both" - by Lamara
Its a very engrossing read that goes into an appropriate amount of detail although it does appear to have an agenda of portraying Mary as a woman who was an underestimated victim and overcome all odds and exceeded expectations to a degree that it comes across as far too subjective at times. Besides that, i'd highly recomend this book to anybody who wants to learn about Mary's life and reign as it gives a nice even spread of both.

"Biography" - by hoss99 (Neath Wales)
Had only read a condensed version so this gave more information. I agree with a review I saw before purchasing this book that the last part of Queen Mary's life was not dealt with in depth

"Vanessa Redgrave vs Glenda Jackson" - by Timster
I remember as a schoolboy being enthralled when taken to see this film on its first 1971 release, and I recall the embarrassment of the teachers, who clearly felt it had been rather risqué for 11-year-olds. (I suppose we were more chary in those days about the sexual content of entertainment watched by young people.) So it was good to buy this DVD on Amazon and see the film again. I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to the general viewer. Historical drama all the way...

Physically, despite both being notably tall women, Vanessa Redgrave is not very much like Mary Queen of Scots (any more than she much resembles Isadora Duncan or Agatha Christie, both of whom she has played brilliantly in her extensive film career), but her performance is terrific, so who cares? What a star! She is matched to the hilt by marvellous Glenda Jackson, reprising ... full review

A thoroughly good read looking back at Scotland's history, they were power hungry and chopped and changed where it benefited them. An old saying heads will roll and many did

"superb biography" - by markr
A big thanks to previous reviewers - I bought this on the strength of previous reviews and I was not disappointed. The author's research from original sources is superb and demolishes many of the myths and downright lies propagated at the time by Mary's enemies on both sides of the border who sought to deflect their own crimes onto her. The author is always fair though, and whilst he doesn't seek to whitewash or exonerate Mary from her sometimes appalling errors of judgement, he does make clear the extraordinary pressures she lived under, and what were for the most part her good intentions, particularly in the factional disaster area that was 16th century Scotland.

An often tragic life, betrayed so often by those she had a right to trust, but in the main lived with dignity, and generosity of spirit. Mary certainly lived a colourful life full of extreme highs and ... full review

"Fantastic" - by Nicholas S Beeson
The performance (and recording) on this CD are first rate. "Come ye" can sound over familiar, but here there is a real sense of enjoyment. The Funeral music is a real treat, especially the trombone quartets. There is a real feeling of grieving, without letting the music become totally sombre.
If you do not know this music, this is a good Cd to start with; if you do know it, this will give you new insights.

"A life on the Ocean Wave" - by Ross (Berkshire, England)
This model is not the hardest to build but it is still satisfying. The instructions were a little confusing in parts with all the criss crossing parts but i was able to use my initiative to work out what went where. Overall it took me 3 days to paint and stick together but i think it was worth the money. if you are looking for a project in-between projects, this is the one. If you want something complicated, however, this may not be for you.

"Really happy with these" - by Julie A Fay
Really happy with these. They grip on the wooden floors unlike any other princess shoe. Follow the sizing guide. There a size bigger, but that’s fine -she’ll grow into them. My daughter has broad feet with a high instep and these fit great. Because of the jelly material, they are really pliable
