"unstoppable funky beat"
Chic's concerts have a special vibe, perhaps surprisingly for disco, which is generally meant to be heard in clubs. They manage to get both - the perfection of the vocal nuances fitted exactly round the beat, and and the sense of live musicians playing with something flexible. Nile Rodgers is amazing; he has sustained the energy and freshness of his early work with Bernard Roberts better than anyone else, practically. You can sense how much he loves playing funk guitar, the rapport he has with the musicians, his generosity that flows to the band, the audience, through the music, it all sort of merges. In other words, it's the ideal live experience. The vocals of Silver Logan Sharp are spot-on, as is newcomer Jessica Wagner, and how elegant they are too ... all the band are dressed in white but all differently ... Geronimo on percussion is an unforgettable presence who apparently played with Jimmy Hendricks and seems to have lost none of his energy - there is a crazy edge that is brilliant. This Montreux concert has very good sound on the DVD. You get many of the hits, the less familiar (but very good) My Forbidden Lover and a medley of the Diana Ross/Sister Sledge numbers which come over very well, particularly I'm Coming Out, which here sounds slightly different from what you know ... The songs are so good they are enriched by existing in different versions, like a lot of Motown hits. It's very reassuring to know that Chic continue to this day to do these amazing gigs.
