"Great book. Great series." - by Lorna Cooke (Oxfordshire)
I just had to buy this book for my son as he's called Nate. I am in the process of buying all the others in the series as they are such great books. They are for reading age 8, but we have been reading them to our son since he was born.
Nate the Great has to solve different cases in each book, but i love the continuing themes throughout the series - Nate has to eat pancakes, Rosamond is always strange etc.
Another great feature is the 'Extra Activities' in the back that are related to the story.

Buy this one first, you won't be dissapointed, and will be back to buy the others.

"Latest Book As Good As the First" - by Ancient Mariner (Colorado, United States)
I kept seeing references to the "Nate the Great" books being classics and decided to try the first one and this one. The first one was, well, great, and, if "Nate the Great, San Francisco Detective" is any measure, after so many years and so many books the series is still top drawer. (This book is the 22nd in the series, first published in 1999. The illustrations are by a new artist, but in the style of Marc Simont, who did the first 20 books.)

There are some very, very good middle grade noir books that feature a middle grade Sam Spade style detective, and I like them because the tight plotting, snappy dialogue, and clean style is not only entertaining but a good model for young readers and writers. Well, this is basically a chapter book version of that that has the same virtues.

Here, Nate travels to San Francisco and ... full review

"A great series of books" - by Robin Alexander
Nate the Great is a detective. He solves mysteries for his friends and their pets, likes pancakes and leaves notes for his mother. My young son adores these books and the promise of a Nate the Great Book is guaranteed to hurry him to bed! They are simply written with short sentences, humour and a puzzle to solve. I recommend any Nate the Great book - it will be enjoyed by both the child and the parents.

"The Missing Christmas Card" - by Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers (Santa Clarita, CA United States)
It is one week before Christmas, and Nate the Great is shoveling his walk. However, he’s about to get a new client when Annie and her dog Fang show up. Fang always gets a Christmas card from his mother, but this year it hasn’t arrived. While Nate and Fang don’t exactly get along (Nate would rather shovel the walk), he reluctantly begins to search for the missing card. What clues can he find?

Somehow, I’ve never read this particular book over the years, and I found it to be fun. Once again, the clues are there, so it is rather obvious when Nate solves it how he did even though I didn’t figure it out early myself. But there is fun to be had along the way with Annie, Fang, and Rosamand and her cats (if not Oliver who is absent from this book).

"The Series Is Strong No Matter Which Books You Choose" - by Ancient Mariner (Colorado, United States)
After seeing so many references to the "Nate the Great" books as being classics I decided to try the first one and a few others. The first one was, well, great. "Nate the Great, San Francisco Detective", which is way out there at number 22, was just as good. This book is right from the heart of the series. It is the 14th in the series, first published in 1992. (The series started in 1972.) The illustrations are by Marc Simont, who did the first 20 books.
