"The perfect foodie Christmas present" - by G. E. Harrison (Cheltenham, UK)
This book by Terrence Conran and restaurant manager Peter Prescott is a guide to food in London - restaurants but also shops, cafes, pubs, markets etc - arranged in areas, including Canary Wharf, The City/Southwark/Dalston, Hackney, Hoxton etc. Each area features a map with the locations noted and then there follows a list with a paragraph describing the restaurant/shop, a photograph and occasionally a recipe from one of the featured establishments. Also included are general notes on the areas together with quotes about the restaurants - these ranged from the innocuous "I really like the Cafe Bloggs" to useful tips on getting the best value and service etc.

The book is nicely laid out, the maps and illustrations are clear and to-the-point but I found the text a bit too small. The photographs are OK, they include pictures of the outside of restaurants/shops, as well as some pictures ... full review

"The Best Guide to Eating in London" - by Fiona BV
This is a fabulous little book. It's for people who just like eating great food with good company. The recommendations are spot on and provides you with little hidden gems in London. I now have a list of new places I want to try. It is beautifully written and photographed. It is also very practical, cleverly categorised and you won't need to spend ages working out where somewhere is.

Perfect as a Christmas stocking filler or just a small gift, if you're popping round to a friend's house.

If you like eating in London - it's a must buy....

"A good guide to some of the good restaurants in London with a few interesting recipes." - by Susan Bailey
A nice book with some recipes in it.
the book has some blurb about various restaurants in London with a picture or collage of pictures on the page facing it. Interesting facts with some of the restaurants history. The sample look inside on Amazon shows what some of the first restaurants are like.BUT after the sample pages, you get blurb about a restaurant and pictures, but no recipe from that restaurant.

The book has a page each for some of the foodie markets in London, where it mentions the name of various cafes and eateries with a collage of photo's facing it. but no recipes from more than one restaurant in the market, some markets do not have any recipes.

At the back of the book is a section on meeting the producers, which is interesting and there is a recipe from most of them.

The reason I love it is that it gives ... full review

"For the lounge, rather than the kitchen...but stunning" - by Dr. Richard Dudley (Conon Bridge, Scotland)
This is a stunning book in almost all ways, but you're unlikely to cook from it.

This is a large, heavy 240 page book. The solid binding is in deep blue embossed in silver. There is no dust jacket. The paper is high quality, heavy gloss, edged in silver. The pictures - and there are very many - are exquisite.

John Williams is a chef you may not have heard of, having spent most of his life in (top end) hotel kitchens. He's not a celebrity plate juggler with a head-spinning number of restaurants, TV shows and books. He appears to be a man who spent his life mastering his art. He now manages chefs at the Ritz, and has done so for over a decade.

This book, then, appears to be a sumptuous paean to both The Ritz and to John Williams. Putting to ... full review

"find a restaurant" - by K. Platt (Sheffield, England)
A great guide to forty of London's finest restaurants. Chapters divide the restaurants into areas with maps at the beginning of each chapter showing the position of the restaurants. There is a useful overview of each area. The restaurants are also listed as to the kind of food they serve and there is also a listing for those offering private dining rooms. I have eaten in some of these places and the descriptions are good. Although the book gives excellent descriptions of the restaurants, their reputation and the kind of food you can expect, it gives no guide as to price. Although it gives the street address, it does not give telephone numbers and websites, where known are not given until the back of the book. The superb photography throughout shows glimpses of sumptuous surroundings in which to dine. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
