"Brilliant!" - by Kevin O'Reilly (Dowdeswell, Cotswolds, U.K.)
Jonathan Bardon displays a real grasp of his material; plus a writing style which is clear and concise, with exactly the right amount of detail. The decision to preserve the 250 radio episode format was a wise one. The individual episodes stand up well as short essays, so you can open the book at random and be sure to find a worthwhile ten-minute read. But if you read them in sequence they make a first class continuous narrative history.

Publishers' blurbs often claim that books will suit both the student and the general reader. Well, this is one of the few cases in which that claim is fully justified. Bardon's work is factually sound (so far as I can judge), beautifully written, and positively enjoyable to read. Thank you, Jonathan !

"Great value for money" - by Saira
I bought this to do a bit of background reading for a module I'm doing at university. It was interesting, seemed to cover all the relevant points in Ireland's history, was of a decent length and overall I think it was great value for money.

"Finely written and information: a unexpectedly enjoyable read." - by jfpessoa
The author is managed brilliantly to make what could have been an academic slog a truly interesting and accessible tour of the Irish language. The book covers the historical span from the Norman invasion to the Free State. There is a very fine introductory chapter which should successfully convince readers lacking a background in linguistics that this is still the book for them. The seven chapters which follow study place of the Irish language in the culture of the country in successive periods, and also discuss how the language itself changed and developed across these periods. It is a two-pronged approach that is superbly handled, and it is what makes this book such a success. The author draws on an amazing array of Irish language material, and his translations, comparisons and discussions of the selections are nuanced and fascinating. If I have a disappointment ... full review

This was an absolutely incredible insight on the dangers the RUC experienced in trying to keep a semblance of normality and prevention of terrorist activities in Northern Ireland. Should be required reading for all N.I. politicians.

"A fairly reasonable and readable summary of Irish History" - by O'Bhogaigh (uk)
Not a bad stab at a fairly complex subject. A great come-in-handy book for the smallest room or coffee table. Easy to dip into and read selected sections as it takes your fancy. Witty jokey style, but not annoyingly so. Possibly slight worry about the limited breadth of authorship and reference sources and the suspiciously un-Irish list of contributors and researchers (why?). It also leaves out quite a few important subjects and events. As long as one accepts that all history is relative and subjective and you apply the normal cautions and caveats then its a very good book.

"Probably the most authoratitive and attractive reference book on rugby football ever published." - by CRC THOMAS
This new coffee table sized, beautifully illustrated book sets a new standard for reference books on rugby football. Originally published in 1996 following the sad and untimely death of its author, the late great Welsh and British Lion player, Clem, RCC Thomas, the manuscript has been updated on every subsequent Lions tour by Greg Thomas, Clem' son who was the British Lions Press Liaison officer on the two recent tours to South Africa and Australia, and who was World Rugby's Media Director from 2002 to 2009.
The book has been enhanced over the last two editions by the added statistical information and photos, plus added research and historical facts from Rob Cole of the esteemed Cardiff based Westgate Sports Agency.
The collusion between Greg Thomas and Rob Cole now offers to the rugby public a definitive work endorsed by the British Lions as its Official History. At a little over £20, it ... full review
