Not for Quiet Listening, Audiobooks or Classical Music
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2018
This review is for those who like to listen to music at a lower volume (or with a lot of empty spaces like piano music or audiobooks). The speaker emits an audible static noise that remains the same at any volume. If you have trained ears (and even if you don't) you will hear it at lower volumes at quiet times - like late night listening.
I bought this item to listen to classical music, audiobooks or some nature sounds to wind down before going to bed. I chose the megablast to not compromise on the lower notes. Thunderstorms, piano, bassy rumbly narratos, they all sound better on a well rounded specturm. But the static noise sadly overshadows it all.
If you are a classical listener, you also probably want to "hear the room" of the recording. However, with all the static - even ever so subtle - you won't be able to hear the room. At places you might even hear some of the drivers mechanical movement / pressure shifting inside the device on certain notes. And this not by standing right next to it, but at several meters away.
Yes this is extreme nitpicking, from a very noise sensitive person. This is the entire point of the review: if you have trained ears or are noise sensitive, this product may not be for you. It is probably a great product for parties or listening on louder volumes - so go check other reviews for those aspects. But if you want a good sound spectrum on lower volumes, this might not be it. Funnily enought, from a company calling themselves "Ultimate Ears" i would have expected more.
Please also note that the customer service I recieved from this product was excellent. I had the product returend once, as I initially suspected that I might have had a broken unit. However the static the speaker emmits seems to be a design flaw. I have several wired speaker systems from over 10 years ago and older that do not emit as much static, even when sitting directly in front of them. I would have expected speaker technology progressing further from that - even on smaller battery operated form factors.
