Sony WH-1000XM2 vs Bose QC35
13 May 2018
I was inbetween this item and the Bose QC35. My partner has the Bose QC35s (v1) so this review compares my experience of the two items.
It's true what they say: the Sonys can get hot and slightly uncomfortable. I was a bit wary of the build quality from other reviews and comments but actually I was very impressed from the Sony's build quality. It seems very sturdy and I haven't been so delicate with it (haven't always put it in the case) but it has survived with no noticeable scratches or scuffs. I have gone on a couple of long haul flights with these, they have gotten ever so slightly uncomfortable but not enough to take them off. I have actually used these whilst running. It gets hot but less annoying than in-ears personally. The cups seemed kind of sweat resistant too.
The battery life is amazing. I use it a lot and charge it only once a week. It survived my 16 hr long haul flight plus pre and after flight. As for the Bluetooth connectivity, I had quite a few issues in the beginning. It would connect via Bluetooth but would still play from my phone rather than the headphones. After disconnecting and connecting a few times, it finally started playing ball and now there's no issue at all.
Now to the main point: active noise cancelling and how this compares to the QC35s. I'm gonna be honest, they are both great and as good as each other. I know that's not what people want to hear; they want to hear one is the clear winner. But they are both extremely good. I hate plane noise and they both make it a far more comfortable journey. I really like how it can adjust to the atmospheric pressure (ideal for planes) and with the Headphones app you can adjust how much background noise you can hear. It's just very flexible. You can also choose over sound quality (LDAC) or stability.
I'm really shocked about these headphones. I thought I was gonna return them for the QC35s but they are so good. Only 'bad' thing is I prefer buttons over swiping / gestures for music control. Sony really like gestures.
Last thing I will say is that my partner tried these. He has a set of slightly erm bigger ears and the Sony's were not suitable for him as the ear cups don't go over his ears so he doesn't get the full experience, especially with ANC.
+ music quality is fab
+ battery is insane
+ ANC is actually amazing
+ build quality
- Costly but it is an investment
- can get hot
- not for everyone's head shape!
