I watched this on the basis of the 'This Is Us' connection. Like most people I'm assuming, I enjoyed the first series of This Is Us, but felt the second series got dragged out to infinity, in order to create a second series at all. This film suffers from the same fate, and sadly so do its characters. The connections within it are tenuous at best, depressing at worst, and contrived, obviously, this is not real life, in order to connect the characters in severely unbelievable ways. I liked This Is Us because of the way it played with our perceptions and continuously surprised us, often in hopeful ways. This film offered none of that. It was entirely predictable, and although it claimed throughout to be a film of 'hope', it actually depicted melancholy, tragedy and death repeatedly, often entirely preventable outcomes, purely for the purposes of tying up its storylines. It also dragged somewhat. There is only so much of this one can watch, particularly when it is being told backwards, and we already know the inevitable outcome. Ultimately, it lacked the meaning its entire storyline was meant to be leading up to, so for me, it was simply a series of tragedies imparted by a surviving family member. It wasn't so much 'Life Itself' as just 'life'.
