I really don't know what are the writers thinking with this franchise. They are going backwards, literally backwards, instead of progressing the story they are dwelling upon origins and exploring background side stories which is immensely frustrating considering the possibilities teased before. We need a progression of the story from the end of part 2, not more dawdling in the past.
As soon as I realised I was watching yet another prequel I felt disappointed. The Last Key is a sequel to the prequel but not a sequel to the sequel. The cliffhanger ending of part 3 is basically ignored, and the even bigger cliffhanger ending of part 2 has STILL not been addressed. So, there's some disappointment straight up.
The fact that our heroine Elise died at the end of part 1, rather saps the tension out of her scenes in this prequel where she's still alive. The same problem was there in part 3 as well; it was a prequel set before she died, so how are we supposed to worry for her safety?
It feels to me like Part 1 (and to an extent part 2) are the canon of Insidious, and everything since then has been a distraction which has very little to do with it.
The good parts - effective scares and some interesting twists - but this could simply have been another horror movie under another name, not an Insiduous one.
