Good USB-C hub, HDMI and Ethernet both work
on 31 March 2018
Having bought a new MacBook Pro it gradually dawned on me how impractical it is in terms of ports and how much I was going to have to spend to overcome this shortcoming.
This USB-C hub is very good, I have bought two, one that I use in the office and one at home.
I can confirm the HDMI output works perfectly on both, I use this to output display to an Acer 23” LCD Monitor. I’ve been using it this way for over a month without any problems.
The hub has a power input so you can plug your Mac power cord into the hub and then the hub into one of the USB-C/thunderbolt ports.
Downsides; I use a stand for my MBP, so the lead from the hub is too short. This left it hanging in mid-air when plugged in, so I have cable tied it to the stand. Not the most elegant solution but it works.
This hub does also cause problems with 2.4ghz wi-fi signals when plugged in. It stops my MBP connecting to my office router. It doesn’t cause problems with my 5ghz wi-fi at home. This is a common issue for usb-c and MacBook pros.
The Ethernet port on the hub works (I use it on the office because of the wi-fi issue), only downside is that the MBP needs rebooting sometimes when first plugged in to pick up an IP address.
There are obviously a few drawbacks with this hub, but I think (having reviewed the competitors) that it offers a good balance between cost and reliability.
