Not what I expected
on 12 September 2018
Having read the reviews for this mattress, I thought that I'd happened upon a gem. We have had the same traditional, firm, sprung mattress for 13 years, and although I couldn't see a problem with it, my wife demanded a new one.
The blurb proclaims that this mattress is bursting with features that result in it being a very good sleeping experience. However, after a week on this thing, we don't feel that the product lives up to it's hype.
For starters, it is not a firm mattress; or even medium firm. For those reviewers that think that this is a medium-firm mattress, I would suggest that they have never owned a firm mattress.
Despite the manufacturer's claims, there is a noticeable sensation of 'roll-together' when either sleeping companion moves anywhere near the middle of the bed. In the short time that we have had this mattress, we have, on most nights, been disturbed by the other's elbow, or foot, as we find ourselves nocturnally migrating toward the center. As a cursory test, one morning, I threw back the covers, lifted my weight off the bed then settled back down. There was a good 9-12 inches of noticeable deflection in the surface of the mattress from the edge of my body. This is not something that we experienced with our old mattress. For reference, I weigh 13 stone. If you or your partner exceed my mass, the roll-together effect may be more noticeable.
In terms of comfort, moving from a firm mattress to this takes a bit of getting used to. Rather than laying on the top, one tends to partially sink into it. When I lie on my back and contemplate the feeling, it is not at all bad. I would almost liken it to (for those of the 80's era) sleeping on a bean bag. Great, but, when I try to sit up in the morning, the softness of the surface seems to absorb the shape of my butt, which makes exiting the bed a tad challenging.
If you intend to purchase this mattress for it's orthopaedic virtues, all well and good, but the potential for a 'twinge' whilst exiting the bed is something one needs to bear in mind.
The softness is also noticeable when sitting on the edge of the mattress. The edge gives very little support. Not a biggy, you might think - and so did I, at first, until the first time that I sat on the bed to put my socks on. It is difficult to explain the additional effort required to accomplish this task. I think it is best left to your own judgement. Maybe it's just me?
The seller offers a decent return and refund policy, and to be honest, we would be inclined to return it, but for the fact that we would never be able to get it back into the box that it was delivered in. It will probably end up on a visitor's bed in a spare room, and we will end up purchasing a firmer, more expensive alternative.
