Great value for Skype or audio recording.
on 11 August 2017
I bought this microphone for use with Skype – as an alternative to a full headset – and for recording voice files. It’s fully lived up to my expectations. Here are my ratings:
Packaging and Included Items - 5/5
The microphone arrived in a handy PVC-leather pouch, which is great for easy storage when you’re not using it. The pouch is pocket-sized, so no issues with carrying it around if you need to without the cable getting in a mess. The spare foam windshield is packed in a small plastic bag so it won’t get lost or damaged.
Usability – 4.5/5
This microphone is plug-and-play on Windows 10 as advertised, and it was ready for use within 30 seconds of being plugged in. It’s supplied with a handy clip for attaching the microphone to clothing or some other mounting point, and it’s very light (only around 100g) so you hardly notice it’s there. The cable is around 1.5m long, which is plenty long enough for use with a laptop or a desktop with a USB port on the front; you might need an extension cable for a USB port on the rear of a tower PC.
The only shortcoming I can see is that the clip requires quite firm pressure to open it; someone with weak fingers might find it difficult to use in a hurry. For me, it’s not an issue.
Microphone quality - 5/5
For my usage, the microphone quality is great. When I’m on Skype, I can use my laptop’s built-in speakers instead of a more cumbersome full headset with boom microphone. The people I talk to regularly report great quality audio with no appreciable pick-up from my speakers.
For voice recording, it’s equally good; I don’t require high-quality audio, but I don’t notice any distortion or noise on my recordings.
This is an omnidirectional condenser microphone, so anyone recording audio against a backing track or live instruments will need to check that it suits their set-up.
This is a versatile, affordable condenser microphone which is great value for everyday use. You can easily pay twice as much for other, similar microphones with equivalent specifications.
