Five Star Video and Audio when functioning correctly!
6 May 2017
The title and rating may seem odd at first glance but are fair comment. I own two of these Panasonic players, one for over a year now. Both are installed with an A/V receiver and 4K TV but in different locations. Normally they function identically but not always.
On two recent occasions one particular player has ceased to perform correctly, coincidentally just as it came out of warranty. The other player appears to dislike some DVD's but plays 4K UHD and standard Blu-ray discs correctly.
First (older) player - Problems
On the first occasion it flatly refused to pass Dolby Atmos or DTS:X signals through the HDMI cable to the A/V amplifier and eventually converted virtually all bitstream audio to LPCM in spite of settings being changed in the system menu. This was finally rectified by a full factory reset of the player.
The second time it gave me problems it would not respond to the remote control's HOME or 'Tray Close' commands and presented the background screen without the icons or went into a 'No Signal' state. Again a factory reset was required to resolve this issue.
Second player (6 months) - Problem
Since purchase this player has had difficulty handling standard DVD's. It develops an intermittent signal stream to both the A/V amp. and the TV screen, often called "blinking". The settings are identical on both players yet this particular machine is the only one to display that problem.
There is no doubt that the Video and Sound quality of both of my players is superb, when they are fully functioning, but there is the unnecessary fiddling or resetting to get them to work perfectly.
When working correctly they get five stars. On the other hand they detract from the simple process of enjoying a video when they develop their quirks. They are not perfect!
