Campark Action Camera.
12 November 2017
A few years ago I tried an early GoPro camera, the quality of the pictures were okay but it was difficult to take good photos due to it not having a display screen. This had put me off and although I quite fancied one for bike rides and especially canoeing trips (to save me from dropping my phone in the drink), I bought one and quickly lost it under a big wave. At least not being an expensive camera, was easier to get over. This is the big advantage to these cheaper action cameras.
The camera comes in a surprisingly small cardboard box from Amazon when you see how much is packed in. The new camera came in a hard fabric case with foam inserts and the contents mostly individually wrapped in small resealable bags. The case is quite full but I'm still able to slot in extra batteries.
There are lots of options to fasten the camera to various objects including helmets. It is a shame there’s not a head or chest harness but I can’t complain with all the accessories included for just over £30 at the time of this review. The full list of equipment included is in the description of the product and is accurate. The main thing that is missing is, you will need to get a microSD card. The instructions say it must be no larger than 32Gb in size but I have a 64Gb card in this and it works fine. Again it’s hard to complain as it clearly states in the advert that it isn’t included and the price is so low. There are two batteries but for less than a tenner, I have bought a ‘SJ4000 SJ5000 Battery, Compatible with SJ4000 SJ5000Li-Ion battery,Battery Type: li-ion; Voltage :3.7V; Capacity: 900mAh’ and they fit just as well as the original. I also have some more heavy duty releasable zip-ties to be able to fasten the camera to virtually anything.
I tried it outside when it was starting to go dark, so I wasn’t expecting much but the video was good, even under water. It is nice to know that it floats, so if you drop it into water it is easy to retrieve. The sound is obviously muffled, it is in a waterproof case, this is to be expected. There are other alternatives if the camera is not going to get wet, to use either a different back cover or no case to improve the sound quality. I have not tried this yet. Compared to the most basic GoPro, it is about a quarter of the price, has a lot more accessories, similar and sometimes better specifications, such as the 2” display. Its build quality of the case and camera appears similar. The camera itself has a rubberised coating to improve your grip when it isn’t in its case. The controls for the camera are intuitive and I had no problem operating it. The fastening accessories took a little more getting used to but still pretty straight forward. There is WiFi but no Bluetooth on this camera. The biggest advantage of this is the quality of the footage and its price. The 4K worked well with no buffering with a fast Samsung 64Gb microSD card. 1080P at 60fps is also good and works well with YouTube when playing at ½ speed (slow motion).
The Android app works very well on 8.1 Android. You might need to turn off mobile data to access the camera WiFi (Android will automatically switch to mobile data if there's no internet access on the WiFi). The WiFi allows you to remotely operate the camera and view what is recording. You can also download recorded clips from the memory card to your phone for uploading. The time and date syncs to the camera from the phone automatically, which is useful and it doesn't remember when you change the battery. Forgetting the time and date is the most annoying part about this camera but is a fault with many other action cameras.
This is designed as an ‘Action’ camera, although tough, it will be positioned that it could break, I could break an awful lot of these for the cost of the GoPro’s. When you also consider the cost, you cannot fail to be impressed. I thoroughly recommend this camera and as its price it is almost disposable, if it breaks, it is quite cheap to replace, whereas a GoPro isn’t. Hopefully this will stay in my possession longer than the last one.
