If you have a sense of humour and a modicum of humanity, you will love this series. I hadn't seen it when it came out originally but because I'm a fan of The Office and especially the brilliant After Life, and having seen Ricky Gervais live I decided to give it a go. Boy was I not disappointed! If you loved After Life you'll love this too. It may not quite match up to After Life but what does, and his writing seems to keep evolving and maturing as he progresses, so I'm expecting great things from After Life 2.
In the meantime, if you haven't seen this then you'd be crazy not to fork out the paltry seven quid for this box set of two series and a Christmas special. If you watch it once you're going to want to see it again...and again. Hats off to all the famous (and a few not quite so famous?) people who guested the series. They're all portrayed as horrible people, and it's testament to them that they're brave enough to play grotesque caricatures of themselves. In fact, hardly anyone comes out of these series untarnished apart from the beautiful and childlike 'Maggie' character, who remains true to herself in spite of what the world throws at her. Brilliant!
I loved Derek, and thought The Office was ok, so I really didn't know what to expect when going into this series. After watching the entire first series, I felt the same way about it as I did with The Office, had funny and at times hilarious moments, but as a whole wasn't nothing special in my opinion, despite its entirely original concept. It was for this reason that I put off watching the rest of the series, but when I finally came around to watching it all, I loved it. Series 2 and the special are a great improvement on the first series, mainly due to the character development throughout, and a more interesting and engaging story line. The main three characters are perfectly acted and hilarious, especially Stephen Merchants character. Nice to see the likes of Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller pop in playing themselves, along with many other great actors. The special is a perfect and moving sum up to the story and is well deserving of its award. So I probably liked the second series and special nearly as much as I liked Derek (which was a 10/10 for me), and the first series was decent as well. On the whole, a great series and well worth the time and money for any gervais fan.
Enjoyed every minute of it. I think it a better series than The Office. And the bonus with buying the DVDs is that you get some additional features which are also (mostly) good. The outtakes often show the Hollywood Stars as genuine people with a great sense of humour (which is of course why they were willing and keen to lampoon and humiliate themselves for Ricky Gervais). And they are the type of programmes that bear repeated viewing, so this box set is a great buy.
What can you say - Extras is a complete work of genius in my opinion. I loved the fact that so many big names put themselves forwards without a care that they were going to be made to look ridiculous - that just elevates them in my opinion.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are both fantastic in this - as is "Barry from Eastenders". We watched the whole box set from beginning to end in about a week and will definitely be re-watching it in future.
There's not many "comedies" out there that can really make me proper laugh but this really does. The writing is Brilliant and the comic timing is spot-on,a genuinely funny show.My personal favourites in the show were Kate Winslett (who knew she was so funny!)and the Legend that is Patrick Stewart which again had me in stitches. If you don't have this boxset in your collection then... Why Not.
Highly recommended. Huge fan of Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant and this is a must see for any fans of them. I know people who dont particularly like Ricky Gervais material like the office and yet found this very funny. For this price, it is certainly worth a watch. Personally, i find it such an entertaining series that i rewatch it occasionally and it still makes me laugh as hard as ever.
