Photographic Creativity On A Budget! - Fits Almost Any Android Smartphone
on 8 August 2018
Having recently bought a new Alcatel Smartphone, which despite it's budget price, has a decent specification, including a 13MP camera sensor, and then seeing this lens set for such a low price, I thought despite it mentioning suitable for iPhone, that it was worth giving them a try, just to see if they would fit, and what was possible.
Considering the price, I was realistic, and had my expectations set very low, doubting they'd have much actual usefulness beyond just the initial testing the water as it were. When I saw the package, it did little to change that, first impressions were a cheap looking printed box with typos, flimsy plastic insert tray, and initially, it even looked as if one of the lenses was missing. Still, it was only £4, so pretty much what I expected, that was until I actually started looking at the contents, and using the lenses.
As the saying goes... "Never judge a book by it's cover", and never has that been so true, as with this cheap lens set, because they actually work really well ...I was impressed! but first things first, some clarification about the phones this set WILL fit...
Forget it mentions iPhone, this set WILL fit ANY phone or smartphone with a camera, be it Android, Windows, even a feature phone, as long as your phone's camera isn't positioned more than 25mm from it's centre to at least one edge of your phone (You'll clip this mount over that edge), and maximum thickness of your phone (including any case, camera moulding or surround) isn't more than 15mm. However, just because it fits, doesn't mean that it will automatically give great results, with or without these lenses, that is obviously dependant on your phone's camera specification, lighting and other factors, as much as the quality of these lenses. I found that on my particular phone, the camera surround is slightly raised, so the mount doesn't naturally sit flat over the camera, but with a little bit of moving around, and the use of a small piece of cardboard to level the mount to the surround, I was able to rectify this, and get it positioned perfectly, so that the lens was centred over the camera lens. Bearing in mind the price, I was amazed at the results overall, sure there is some distortion / blurriness around the outer frame of the picture, but this can simply be cropped out. I mainly bought this for the wide angle and macro lenses, and of the 2, I found the macro is the most useful and impressive for close-ups on circuit components etc.
Overall, for £4 this set is a no brainer, it's worth that just for the macro lens alone IMHO, with the quality of the items being very good, and easy to use (simply screw the lens into the mount, although this is a bit fiddly, and remember the wide angle lens needs to be used attached to the macro lens to be able to mount). I'm sure you can get better quality, more expensive lenses for your smartphone, but personally, if I really wanted to get better results, I wouldn't be using a smartphone at all, I'd be using my Fuji camera. As they say, the best camera, is the one you have with you, and for most of us, that's a smartphone!
