Better Watch Saul!
16 February 2017
Season 1 of this increasingly compelling TV series set the tone for what promises to be an equally addictive 2nd season. Of course this television drama grew out of the unforgettable Breaking Bad and I, for one, wondered how the sequel, albeit featuring the wonderful character Saul Goodman in the title role, might evolve.
Briefly, some years before he bacame involved with Walter White and his nefarious activities Saul was a relatively well-meaning fellow named Jimmy McGill running a not very successful law practice from a room in a nail salon in Albuquerque. Along the way the viewer sees the developments that gradually transform Jimmy into the Saul of Breaking Bad fame.
Season 2 takes up where Season 1 left off and I decided to watch Season 1 once again before viewing the second series in order to brush up on the various storylines and I was glad I did as while I remembered the main aspects of the plot, there were many things I had not registered clearly enough to remember them. I will not go into the story in any detail to avoid inadvertently including spoilers. Although, the story centres more on the characters than on any real mystery there are some powerful plot twists and the action is gripping.
Bob Odenkirk is superb in the title role but then fans of Breaking Bad would expect no less and the acting overall is of a very high standard. It is advisable to pay close attention when watching Better call Saul as there is plenty of detail and references that one needs to be on one's toes to catch. I said earlier that this series is character driven and indeed it focuses mainly on two relationships i.e., between Jimmy and his brother Chuck (the dynamic here is wonderful and at the same time appalling) and between Jimmy and his erstwhile colleague Kim- who features more prominently in Season 2 which is all the better for her raised profile.
Better Call Saul is addictive viewing and, if anything, Season 2 is perhaps even better than the first season.
