Brilliant for the money
11 January 2018
For the price, this is a great little (literally) Bluray player, with some extra features thrown in, such as SACD playback, bluetooth audio connectivity and a small number of apps, such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, and my long-time favourite, MUBI, for films that appeal more to me than those usually available elsewhere.
I opted for this player based on my long experience with other Sony electronics, and frankly not wishing to splash out on a far more expensive bells and whistles player. My ancient Panasonic player, which still gives a good picture, was showing its age by the length of time it took to read the data on a BD before it would play, and this was getting on my nerves. This little Sony has more than met my needs in this respect and the quality of the image it puts out betters the Panasonic. Build quality is a bit utilitarian and the disc draw is not that refined, but the unit as a whole is serviceable and I guess I'd have had to fork out much to see a noticeable improvement in my modest set up.
The only glitch I encountered when setting it up was when inputting my router password. I kept getting a failed to connect message, but I did notice that when inputting the password it flashed up the underscore when I was inputting a hyphen. I then switched to "show the password" as I typed, and then, oddly, I did get hyphens showing and not underscores. Why this should be so, I don't know, but with the correct password now showing the Sony connected to the wifi. Wifi is useful when playing CD's as the Sony automatically connects to Gracenote to pull music information, and it only takes a second or two at the most.
I think that this is a great little player for the money and it seems Sony has majored on the main thing: the electronics, even if it has been necessary to shave off the cost of the case. It does an excellent job of upscaling DVD's, but it is region coded and will not play my NTSC discs, BD or DVD. The remote is smaller than most but being somewhat chunky and with functions clearly marked I find it a joy to use. All in all, a great little player and well priced.
