A quantum leap ahead of my old Forerunner 10
5 April 2018
This is fantastic. I uupgraded from a very basic Forerunner 10 and also replaced a FitBit Zip. The Forerunner 230 tracks my steps so no need for the FitBit too (whch had become a little unreliable). The best things about this are (a) the lightning fast lock on to the GPS signals; (b) the semaless sync with the Garmin smartphone app (sometimes I get back from a run and the data is on the Garmin site (and synced separately to Runkeeper) before I've taken my shoes off); (c) yhe battery life and quick charge - it goes at least a week between charges if I run once or twice a week and keep it tracking steps. I thnk this is mainly down to the battery being a decent size and ther being no heart rate monitor (I didn't want one - Im not convinced the optical wrist ones are particularly accurate). It is possible to accidentally catch the button that initiates the GPS (I did that in the night once and the beep to tell me it was ready for me to run woke me up). But it is straightforward to use the lock facility so this doesn't happen. It's fun to be able to customise the watch face with your own photograph, though the resolution and colours are pretty poor to be honest - smartphone screen it is not! I haven't got to the stage of trying out the VO2 Max estiation and race finish time predictor yet. If you are familiar with the Garmin Connect app, then you'll find this watch works very well with it.
