Mr. Richard Bell
5.0 out of 5 starsone of my most favourite films of all time
27 May 2017
Absolutely superb film, one of my most favourite films of all time. Matt Damon is superb and the story flows so well. My only criticism is the extended version loses some of the pace, some scenes are drawn out too long and the additional 16 minutes don't add anything to the story, just labour some points a little too long. Fortunately with the UHD edition you get both cinema release and extended version on UHD. I'd highly recommend watching the standard, cinema release over the extended version.

The UHD picture and sound quality are mesmerising, a truly superb sample of what UHD can offer. I only wish UHD price point was around the £15 mark and not £20 - £25....

3.0 out of 5 starsDecent movie but make sure you read the book after.
22 January 2017
I read the book first and it probably rather influenced my impressions from the film. I admit it is impossible to put all nuances and emotions of a pretty long story into a couple hours on screen. So, sorry.

It was a lot more difficult in the book. It was a lot more dangerous. It was dirtier and hungrier. The roller coaster of hope and catastrophe was a lot more pronounced in the book. It took more people, effort, compromise, hard work, dedication and sheer will power in the book. The book was better at showing the guy's genius at survival. And his amazing sense of humor, which probably carried him through.

But it is still a good movie. Just don't read the book before.

4.0 out of 5 starsVery good Science Faction movie, you do need to suspend disbelief but much less than usual. Good fun
13 August 2017
Format: DVDVerified Purchase
Good Science Faction film with all Ridley Scotts usual cinematic flair. Not too implausible with no alien threat or need to feel the force, it is Robinson Crusoe in space with a man triumphing over adversity with brain rather than brawn, a refreshing change. On the down side there is perhaps one too many disaster used to ramp up the tension it becomes almost predictable, things have run smoothly for ten minutes so something is about to explode and the failures are always loud and dramatic, never anything deadly but lacking in visual flair. The Aries space ship is way too Hollywood, many times bigger than the International Space station the resources required to create it would be phenomenal, chances of NASA funding something like that nil.

5.0 out of 5 starsFirst class transfer of an engaging book on to celluloid. Made with a sure touch, energy, and respect.

Love the book. Love this film which does the book justice. Switches nicely, and in a timely way, between Mars and the Earth-based scenes. Good humour. Well-acted. Revolves around a genuine dilemma for the marooned astronaut - how to survive the ultimate loneliness, and similar for the crew - whether or not to commit to a further 18 months in space to return to Mars for one man. Love the soundtrack (matches the desolate terrain). Warrants repeat viewings so worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 starsAs good as the book
14 February 2018
Format: Blu-rayVerified Purchase
This turned into one of my favourite films. After reading the book, I was concerned the film would be too boring and number driven, and I wondered how they would portray Watney recording his day activities to a diary. But they do it well. I didn't feel at any point that the film was forced, and Watney's day-to-day is covered by montages and him talking to the camera. I'm a huge fan of Matt Damon, and he is great in the Martian, as is the mass of supporting cast in Space and on Earth. The end veers slightly from the book, but for the most part it is very close to the story, and they don't take many liberties. Scott has created a masterpiece.

R. F. Stevens
4.0 out of 5 starsA ‘What If?’ that almost works
25 December 2018
Format: Blu-rayVerified Purchase
This is for the 3D Bluray version. Matt Damon is convincing as resourceful Watney, abandoned for dead on Mars by his crew, forced into becoming a futuristic Robinson Crusoe but one with far fewer possibilities for surviving any length of time.

The cinematography is superb, and Ridley Scott’s talented touch transforms the film from being just another banal de-construction of a really good book into something becoming almost convincing. It is a cut above the rest and definitely well worth watching, especially in 3D with a proper surround sound system.

Of course the science doesn’t work, but then this is fiction, and it is well enough managed in the film that we can easily suspend disbelief and enjoy our immersion in the story. Here and there the filmic treatment is cumbersome and too obvious, especially when one compares this to the book, but then there is a lot more in the book and the film would be far too long if it was truly faithful to the text.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent film of an excellent book
20 August 2018
Format: Prime VideoVerified Purchase
Bought the book first for my Kindle and was totally gripped by it. However I could not see how it could be made into a successful film - but it can and it has been. The film was as gripping as the book and I was totally drawn in to his struggle to survive in such an alien environment. As someone of a technical background I demand realism when explaining how a situation is to be resolved and this book and film delivered this completely. This was worth watching and the book is worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 starsTheatrical version is the best
13 January 2019
Format: DVDVerified Purchase
The Martian is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Firstly, it is the only movie ever produced about outer space, that shows an actual and realistic scenario and story line in a near tangible future (without ridiculous aliens, absurd props and lame story line). Second, it is optimistic and for the most part scientifically based, which makes the movie likeable all way through. Third, brilliant casting and acting by Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain - and Kirsten Wiig, whose performances are so good that they let you believe, that this can actually happen. The extended version is not worth watching as others have already written, but the extras do show some nice "behind the scenes" footage (approx 40-50 minutes or so). If you like the latter, then buy the extended version. If indifferent, then the regular DVD will suffice. Nevertheless .. The Martian is a MUST SEE :)
