MisterWives are a New York City-based ensemble built around the voice and keyboard talents of Mandy Lee. Their debut album is a deftly constructed and wonderfully frothy affair. That they clearly understand the mechanics of a good pop song is patently evident in this 12 track collection. The tunes are strong; the beats range between frisky and knee-trembling and Ms Lee sings her little heart out (what she occasionally lacks in tonal colour she more than makes up for with infectious enthusiasm!). There really are some cracking tunes here.
Among the best are opening track 'Our Own House', which, once it gets into gear, hurtles along like a shining silver bullet-train and (coming a very close second) 'Best I Can Do' which sports a solid bouncing bass line, nice jangly guitar and a rip-roaring chorus built to make the rafters rattle. On the gentler side of the stream 'Coffins' is a curiously lovely invention despite its somewhat sinister title but on the whole the project is content to maintain an upbeat trajectory. (Listen to 'Imagination Infatuation' and see if you can manage to stop your toes from tapping!)
MisterWives are a breath of fresh air. Music to raise our spirits and make our nether regions wiggle!
