Great, feature packed camcorder!
8 November 2016
I have only just started going through the functions of this camera. It has a lot of features packed away, but easily accessible in the menu. There are some functions via buttons and a quick and easy way by pressing and holding the manual button to assign the lens ring to control focus, or zoom, iris, gain etc.
The three inch led display is bright and sharp. The Oled tru-finder is also excellent. There are many presets and auto modes and manually controlled functions if you need to be especially creative. Sound seems quite good, but a let down is the mic picks up the vibrations of hand movements around the camera body, which slightly lets the camera down with quite a plasticky feel, although it looks the business.
The camera is quite big and lends itself to being operated on a sturdy tripod. The eye viewfinder works better this way as being mounted on your shoulder there is no side ways adjustment to pull it further out from the camera body.
Video quality is great in all the available settings 1920x1080i and P 50fps and 25fps (PAL in the UK) 200x digital zoom works well
Storage to SD card and 32Gb of internal memory. Only one slot for an SD card or Sonys own version.
There are two cold shoes and one active hotshoe for Sonys' adapter for XLR mics as the mic supplied plugs in via 3.5mm stereo jack. The built in led light is very handy, but its limited illumination would probably be only for closer shots.
A nice little extra is being able to remotely connect via a smart phone app. The wirelessly transmitted image suffers with latency, but I will find this useful, so to me not just a gimmick.
Two year guarantee once you register with Sonys' Pro registration on line. There is an option to extend for a third year, and I would assume this would be at a cost. I choose to insure my electronic products elsewhere, so did not investigate Sonys' extended warranty.
To sum up. This is a great looking camera, packed with features. Great video quality, but let down by vibration through the camera body picked up by the mic. The body is a bit plasticky. The eye piece could be set a bit further out from the camera body for a more comfortable shoulder mounted application. The tripod screw thread looks plastic, but not sure if this is the case.
I am looking forward to using my camera, and for the money, (A little over a £1000) it is featured packed.
I have given it 4 stars as not perfect, but what lets it down does not let the video quality down. I will fit a shock mount to the front cold shoe to mount the mic to reduce unwanted noise although I record sound sound separately and sync it in post.
There are lot more features I have not covered at the moment. I will update this review as time goes by.
This camera has many manual features that will help produce professional video movies. Manual Focus, Manual Iris, Manual Shutter speed. These all are very useful to a home movie maker and used along side a good editing suite, a professional production can be produced.
The full HD 1920x1080 50fps has very fine detail, probably better than the what the human eye can see naturally. This can be a little harsh I find, so some refining in the editing process for me is required. Saying this you can use the footage straight from the camera if editing is not your thing.
