A good way to show off your 4K TV but not really worth the money.
on 17 December 2014
If you don't subscribe to Netflix, this is going to be just about the only way you are going to show off the 4K capabilities of your new Samsung TV. I'm not sure, however, if that makes it a worthwhile purchase for early adopters or owners of 48" Samsung 4K TVs who missed out on the current Samsung offer to provide this free.
The three movies provided aren't bad, but on my 48" set do not look significantly better than on blu-ray. Some of the additional demo clips provided show off the 4K definition better but there's a limit to how many time-lapse shots of shorelines and cities one can watch before boredom sets in.
The hard disc is less than half full so it can be used with the TV's built-in recording features, but you can buy a bigger disk and a few months' subscription to Netflix for less than this unit. Note that the original press releases from a while back suggested that the price of the unit was going to include a subscription to new content and this would have made the asking price more reasonable. Unfortunately this does not now seem to be on offer.
So, nothing wrong with the quality but something of a luxury at the current price.
