A worthy reboot
24 July 2017
I didn't have great hopes for this, but I was blown away! It takes all the elements that made the original Godzilla a work, and adapts them to a modern audience.
The basic elements are there. The slow build up, as we learn about the danger humanity faces; the horror of the unstoppable beasts; the thrill of watching them smash up the city as they fight; the drama and heroism of the people caught up in the events; the conflict between scholars and the military (the scholars are right, of course) and so on. But whereas the original Godzilla was made for an audience who had seen Tokyo burn, this movie draws its horror from more recent events: the Twin Towers, the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima. And whereas the original was about the evils of modern weaponry, this movie is about man's folly in thinking he can manipulate nature. But don't worry -- the message never gets in the way of a good old fashioned monster bash.
There are moments of sheer directorial indulgence, too. The skydive scene is a thing of beauty.
Watch it. And then watch it again with your 12-year-old nephew.
