A Adventure you will never want to end Andrew Lippa is a rare find when it comes to the World Of Musicals !!!!!!! This is because not since Sondhiem have I found such a polished composer and lyricist, he has a way with words and music that makes you want to laugh out loud one moment and crying buckets the next, it's such a gift my favourite songs are Fight The Dragons' Time Stops, Daffodils, Be The Hero, Showdown and The River Between Us ( Which didn't make the final show and has been religated to a bonus track, which is a shame because this is the my all time favourite from this one because Bobby Steggert and Norbert Leo Butz are wonderful as the distant father and son.) Kate Baldwin is amazing and sings a couple of wonderful solos Two Men In My Life and I Don't Need A Roof, this Is a spellbinding, mildly sinsister, heart wrenching account of the Life of a father and son, one who refuses to grow up and has his head full of giants, mermaids and witches, and one who wants nothing more then his father to stay home and bond with him and get his head out of the clouds. If you like this check out The Addams Family also By Lippa.
I surprised myself by finding this score remarkably enjoyable ; I am a devotee of the traditional Broadway musical and I don't know the film on which this show was based . However, the music and lyrics tread the line between traditional and contemporary in a most attractive way .The show is so well cast that it is a pity that it had so shot a run in new York
I only know the movie as the source of this show and I think the composer has really made it sing. I wish I had got to see the show on a Broadway as the music really evokes an interesting world to set this wonderful tale in.
Big Fish is the latest musical by the very talented composer Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, A Little Princess, Wild Party) which is based on the book and movie of the same name.
This is a character driven show and the music really evokes a very touching level of intimacy. There are some incredibly moving ballads peppered amongst the rousing chorus numbers. My copy arrived yesterday and I've listened to it four times so far. To be a little more critical...none of the songs has stayed in my head, allowing me to hum or sing it around the house; but I have no doubt that this WILL happen with a few more listens.
If you liked Lippa's other work, there's absolutely nothing here to hate. Here's hoping for a UK production!
