Finally got around to watching this one recently as was never sure if it would appeal to me, and I have to say I have mixed feelings. I do think it is overhyped, but at the same time it is a decent film.
The premise is original, and thankfully they picked two actors good enough to hold a film up on their own (although it does lose something half way through .. no spoilers).
I watched it in 3D, and both the special effects and the 3D are awesome, no doubt.
Where is does fall apart for me is the ridiculousness of it. Cannot say too much without containing spoilers (I know it is something like 5 years old as I type this, but there are still people out there like me who have never seen it up til now), but while concept is great with the stranded characters trying to find their way home, the sillyness of how they go about it does make me cringe at times. You have a veteran (Clooney) and a first timer (Bulloch) and while you can kinda accept the veteran could some how manage this, it does become a bit ridiculous when the newbie who is scared and admits to have only ever crashed the simulator everytime she used it, is suddenly just as good as the veteran. And do not even get me started on the "hallucination" scene.
Over all, a decent film, but nowhere near as great as some people would make it out.
