Fantastic first film from Tarantino
14 February 2018
Having first watched this film years ago, I always held it in high regards. I recalled it being a tense thriller, but simple in premise. Gritty and dark. After reading an article on the 25th anniversary, I decided to give it another watch Despite being a relatively simple story, bank job gone wrong, and for the most part, taking place all in one room, Tarantino manages to keep you gripped for the whole 1hr40.
I am a big Tarantino fan, and I believe this film to be one of his best. It's small, and tightly worked. Packing in a lot of story into a small warehouse. The use of flash backs to explain the back story of some characters, and while leaving out others works well, and keeps you guessing as to the final outcome.
I watched the version on Amazon Prime, so I cannot speak for the quality of the BluRay, but this film appears to be intentionally dirty. While the HD version is clear, is is not as sharp as you might expect a HD film to be now. I think this is intentional, as it goes along with the somewhat murky and dirty nature of the film. Similar tactics have been used on 28 Days Later, there is no HD version of that film.
Overall Reservoir Dogs is a fantastic film, and has an absolutely huge cast. Each actor is superb, and they play off each other beautifully. 9/10
