If you like techno then this is an album you really need to get. It's fantastic!
This isn't your modern style of techno, slowed down and intricate, this harks back to the classic chunky, fast paced techno style that that I remember from the late 90's. It's so refreshing to hear this still being produced with such dynamic results.
It starts with a slow build up on 'Squemish sort' which eventually breaks into a glorious driving rhythm and heavy baseline. The title track continues in the same vein and continues hitting all the right spots.
Track 3 - 'Slap' - is one of the highlights of the album and adds a little variety to the sound. You still have your driving pulsating beats but Umek adds a little something extra. Creative, intelligent techno but more pacey than something from Booka Shade.
'Pedestrian' is aptly titled, at first it seems a bit disappointing but turned up loud, through a good system, will demonstrate new depths to the track.
'Individual Breath' is a classic big room track. It has this sharp loop right through the middle and a great beat behind which builds nicely, climaxes and then develops all over again.
Finally, I will have to mention just one more track, 'Sequence of shapes'. A dark deep beat starts us off, a new more threatening beat then comes in, the track remains mid paced occasionally building up to add more sounds. A little high repetitive squeak enters the fray but the tone remains dark and sinister. This track just continues to develop and develop throughout it's 7 or so minutes. Fantastic.
All due respect to Umek. A worthy and enjoyable purchase.
Umek is a Slovenian DJ, producer and remixer of all things techno but his new album 'Responding To Dynamic' finds him following his own creative muse to fine effect.
This is highly imaginative and intelligent dance music. It also has an innate ability to stir our blood and viscera (not to mention the strain it puts on connective tissue!)
The beats are big and dirty and impossible to keep still to. What these compositions lack in musical development they more than make up for in raw ebullient energy. Repetition is a strength in Mr Umek's rhythmic and tonal vocabulary.
The ten tracks in this collection all range between seven and eight minutes in length. There is a satisfying coherence in listening to it from beginning to end in one sitting. Logical; hypnotic; highly structured and strangely stirring.
This is machine music made by a man who understands the potential power of mathematics. Add, subtract, multiply, divide : it's all there in the mix. Over and over again.
No one track is better than any other. It is a democratic affair from side to side, from top to tail. No heroes; no villains; no leaders; no followers. If there were a heaven or a hell they both might be filled with beats just like this!
Opening number 'Squeamish Sort' sets the standard and everything else falls into step behind it until the final bars of closing track 'Utopian Societies' brings us round full-circle to join up mouth to tail with our first memories of this remarkable set.
Uncompromising, single-minded and brutally beautiful in its own way, 'Responding To Dynamic' is a force to be reckoned with.
