I first saw this many (many) years ago and the promise it made then has just bettered with age. The acting is as you would expect from this standard of players and although a deceptively simple story, the characters really do portray their backgrounds in a manner that you feel for the isolated 'children' and what they are living through (WW2). Some of the actors have gone on to more fame than others (Helen Mirren) but all are easily recognisable from English TV. Probably not as well known or lauded as it should be - highly recommended.
Although the packaging said that Oliver's Travels was included in this pack there were two episodes missing which is most unsatisfactory. The package is designed for 3 CDs but as the Pardoner's Tale was also included there was never the possibility of all of Oliver's Travels being included
I was delighted with the service I received. The film is just as good as I remember it from my younger years. You forget the adults are playing children you just get caught up in the whole thing. Funny, Serious, Happy, Sad with the real feel of the time when I was young. A jolly good viewing, thoroughly enjoyed.
what a cracking drama, remember seeing this on tv,when it was first aired, brought it to see if it stood the test of time,it certainly does!the cast list is full of top english actors, the story is simple, kids doin what they used too, pushing prams ,being aeroplanes, and of course soldiers, you,ll laugh and cry,and leave remembering, you,re childhood,
i adore this film,it will have you in fits of laughter, brilliantly acted by all,you will realy believe you are watching kids not adults.so well written you will never tire of it,a little known gem.just wish amazon could get a hold of the sequel as its equally as good as the first.
This is a really thought-provoking film. It also provides the opportunity to see some of Britain's most well-known actors and actresses before they became really famous. It's well written and well cast and a must for all fans of Dennis Potter.
