An education in quality, 20th century film music
1 May 2017
Ron Goodwin was up there with some of the best film composers. I managed to get hold of a signed LP by him in a charity shop.
I have music of his on CD and vinyl, and the range of film music he did was quite varied. The music of "Where Eagles Dare" is some of his best, and contrasts with the fun of "Those Magnificent men....." and "Monte Carlo or Bust", and others. "The Trap" is used for the London Marathon most years, and the "Battle of Britain" music is very emotive. "Aces High" is one of my favourite in that suite, originally the Luftwaffe March. William Walton was upset that a lot of what he wrote for the Battle of Britain film was not used, and Ron Goodwin's score took over.
So a great collection of tracks. The complete soundtrack of "Where Eagles Dare" is worth looking out for. I didn't realise he wrote some music for "Beauty and the Beast".
