Gladiator is one of my all time favourite films and so it was a day one purchase when the 4k disc was announced.
The 4k version of the movie is as amazing as you'd expect, the picture is prestine and the sound is amazing.
Would recommend for either fans of the film or collector's of 4k movies.
Comes in a lovely sleeve also which I didn't know!

One of the finest uses of HDR you will ever see. But no sign of the free offer with the purchase.

This review is of the 4K Blu-ray version
As a movie, Gladiator is truly magnificent.
I have read that many find the hdr to be very dark in this movie
I would suggest that this movie needs a very powerful tv to get the best from its hdr. It’s going to need a tv that can do around 1000 nits hdr.
My tv can do this and the picture is truly marvellous and much better than the Blu-ray version. Colours and deep and accurate and true. You won’t find a better example of hdr being used properly in any movie.
I highly recommend the 4K Blu-ray of gladiator but with the warning that unless you have a very powerful tv correctly calibrated then you just may be disappointed
This is a 4K Blu-ray where caveat emptor applies.
Few movies, if any are this demanding on your tv, but it’s just about the best picture you will ever see.

Gladiator 4k blu ray came with three months free access to Amazon Music unlimited. Unfortunately i never received this nor did i get any promised emails from amazon to activate the agreed offer. When i contacted Amazon regarding this, via their chat system, i was given garbled and convoluted instructions on how to activate the offer which required me to pay up front for the free offer!
When i asked the amazon representative for an email transcript of the chat, he sent a message saying id get the transcript after i had paid for the subscription that was supposed to be free. Then he cut me straight off.
I am knocking two stars off my review as ive not received the complete package that comes with gladiator 4k.
I found the amazon representative to be, ultimately rude and unprofessional. It seems the purchase comes with a free offer that you have to pay for.

The main disc contains both the cinema and uncut versions, plus an additional disc of extras. Why the director chose to cut certain scenes for distribution, I don't know. The uncut version is better for the inclusions, and they do not add unduly to the running time. The main film disc in the first set I received would not play at all; in fact, it locked up every blu-ray player I tried it in. The extras disc, in which I have no interest at all, worked perfectly! Full credit to Amazon, they arranged to have it collected immediately, and just as rapidly replaced it with a good one.This set is good value for including the uncut version.

Debuting a month of great cinematic classics on the 4k market, Gladiator in the UHD format is a sight to behold..filmed in 35 mm the transfer can look a bot soft by moments but the hdr is the true star here..the WCG is incredible here and all the scenes shine through giving it a true advantage over the blu ray which fills dull when compared to his 4k counterpart.. details are incredible and the DTS X track unleashed hell in glorious mayhem ..This 4k edition comes with all the previous features on a separate blu ray disc (it’s the same blu ray as the previous release ) and in its form earns my highest recommendation.. A must buy for every fan of this cinematic achievement

My purchase is the 3 disc box set consisting of 'Gladiator', 'The Fall Of The Roman Empire' and 'Spartacus'. For unknown reasons to me Amazon is showing my review under the sole film 'Gladiator'.
The three films are absolutely spectacular with 'Spartacus' (1960) in the fully restored format of 3 hours and 6 minutes, by Robert Harris and James Katz, and this is the best version in my opinion, at least for us DVD buyers not Blu-ray users.
'Fall' (1964) is also restored, 2.0 Stereo sound, 16:9 widescreen, 2 hours 52 minutes long. The plot bears a striking resemblance to 'Gladiator' in many ways throughout both films which is interesting, and 'Fall' is without the blood and guts of Ridley Scott's epic.
Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' (2000) reinvented the 'epic' that was so popular in the 50's and 60's and must be regarded as a classic. To me it's the saddest story of a man who loses everything and his only fulfillment left is revenge. The hopelessness and bitterness of the main protagonist played by Russell Crowe seeps through his every scene, an absolutely top performance.
Running time 2 hours 29 minutes, plus an audio commentary by the director.
All three films have English subtitles.

I had the original on DVD, and needless to say it was a fantastic film with good picture quality, but in 4K all I can say is ' WOW '.I will never tire of this film and Russell Crowe was something else.

Picture on this transfer is free of that horrible EE that shouldn't be used or even needed on bluray discs much less DVD. Colours look warm and other times naturally toned or hyper enriched but not too distracting to the cinematography.
Sound on the DVD is a few db higher on some dialouge passages over the bluray but I'm not going to get too fussy about today, maybe tomorrow.
The frequency response doesn't go much further down 23Hz but its very shallow at around 23Hz, thou I see an almost tiny trickle of 20Hz using the spectrum lab, frequency waterfall graph recorder with chapter 19 some of Foley body fall impacts as Maximus, raises his, leg to push over another Gladiator onto his back with a deep thump! LCRS channels I would be really expecting to a flat 20Hz or a bit lower. LFE.1 is frequently used on the film lows only reaching down around 30Hz that suspiciously looks like like some frequency filtering of maybe the original theatrical mix, (with a watered down near-field) the lows are mostly covered over LCR with some now and then lows in the surrounds.
GLADIATOR does sound close to how I remembered the sound effects and Foley sound footsteps after seeing/listening too it at the cinema two times at two different cinemas with (Dolby Digital SR-D) odoen screen 1, Bournemouth and Empire Leicester Square Empire 1, London.
No discrete 6.1 of the dts-ES discrete mix here. Still the PLIIx expands any phantom sounds from the sidewall surrounds to the back of the room with a better steering than Dolby-EX which is only a single mono matrix rear back. PLIIx is a stereo matrix rear back that gives better positioning of the rear surround with 5.1 mixes.

Far from historically accurate but an entertaining tale of Roman conquest and treachery after the good emperor Marcus Aurelius is murdered by his ambitious son Commodus. General Maximus, the legal heir to the deceased emperor, is seized by troops loyal to Commodus and led into the forest to be executed but he survives, gravely wounded, but able to return home to see the bodies of his murdered family and slaves. He is rescued by a travelling slave-trader and sold to the owner of a gladiator school, eventually returning to Rome where he will face the emperor for a final time. Well written and acted, filmed and directed. The combat scenes are especially bloody bringing the Romans' bread and circuses into your living room (you supply the bread!). If you haven't seen this already, the BD is a bargain!

This remastered bluray of gladiator has really improved the overall look and feel of this modern day classic for me.
I've watched it a few times now and compared it to the original release.
I'm no expert but the original was subpar in picture quality for such a great movie on bluray. Thankfully its all good with this one! The contrast has been tweeked throughout which has resulted in a slightly warmer picture and fine details have been enhanced dramatically such as damage to battle armour, armour detail, skin textures and facial pores are visible now as are the finer details in scenes throughout the movie from architecture to the crowds and battle scenes which does only add to the atmosphere. The scenes shot in darker extremes are much clearer in this remadter, finer details again picked up on. I think people have previously mentioned that the mysteriously disappearing flaming arrows and fireballs in the opening battle against the Germanic horde have been remastered brilliantly so you can now follow the flames right to their intended targets! Ouch!
Audio quality here is very good too. If lucky enough to own a nifty surround sound system, whack it on because you'll be ducking whooshing flaming arrows, explosions, dodging the clank of swords in battle (or buy some foam rubber ones to join in with the kids!) to the more quiet non battle scenes where you can close your eyes and imagine you're actually in a horse driven cart as the wooden wheels squeek, creak and hobble over stony ground! The clarity of the spoken word is also spot on as of course is the soundtrack.
A great movie made even better. Visually breathtaking and audio wise very good indeed. A must have in your bluray collection.

Gladiator brilliant Russell crowe is great in this film he played a roman general who fights in brittania for richard Harris who was such a brilliant actor who played the roman emporer right from the beginning the fight scenes are great a powerful film that shows how the Romans last for power lead to disaster and deception. Russell crowe as a general gets stuck in the middle of an emporer who is dying who knows how corrupted the roman empire is and the new emporer who sees russel crowe as a problem and sends him to his death and kills his loved ones back in Rome but Russell crowe escapes and then finds himself in slavery and is bought by a trader to fight as a gladiator this trade is also played by one of the best British actors who died whilst filming this film the late Oliver reed who takes Russell crowe back to Rome to face the emporer who killed his family to gain back his pride and to avenge his loved ones.this blu ray disc is the one you want the sound is amazing the picture is great a total masterpiece.
