If you like Band of Brothers, you may also like this

If you like Band of Brothers, there's a good chance you might also like this. It almost looks like a template for large parts of the later HBO series. In part that's simply because it tells part of the same story. But it's also because this is, for the time it was made, 1949, quite a gritty depiction of America at war. Van Johnson is the big name, but it's actually an ensemble piece (again, like Band of Brothers), in which pretty much all the actors shine (James Whitmore, as Sgt. Kinnie is particularly good).
The story concerns a bunch of guys about to go to Paris on leave, who instead wind up in Bastogne, just when Germany launches her last ditch attack in the West, which we've come to know as the Battle of the Bulge. There's gritty realism, some humour, and a good story, at the heart of this film. It's not an out and out classic. But, if you're a war movie buff, it's certainly one to watch.
