Always loved this from the 70s. My brother bought this as Marvin Gaye - In The Groove and it was played to death on our old Ferguson record player. Obviously the killer track has to be "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", but the whole album is full of absolutely gorgeous Motown songs, with contributions from Holland, Dozier & Winfield, stalwarts of the Motown song writing machine, members of the Gordy family, Marvin Gaye himself and also Carol King (a fact I was not aware of at the time!).
All in all an absolute must for anyone who loves Motown at its best.
Having first heard 'What's Going On?', it convinced me to get some of Marvin Gaye's earlier material, and I was not disapointed. There's not much wrong with this album - of course, everyone knows the classic title song, known as one of the greatest cover versions of all time, but the rest of the material here (also cover versions of classic 50's rhythm & blues songs) manages to match the quality reached on that track. In particular, the opener 'You' and 'You're what's happening in the world today' display the kind of soulful ingredients that made Gaye such a star in the years following this album.
