This recording of Turandot is overlooked. Caballe has the honour of bringing off both female roles on disc: Liu in the Decca recording and here as the icy pincess Turandot. She may not have the power of Nilsson but she nails the top Cs and brings fine subtlety to "In Questa Reggia", making it really moving. Carreras is no Corelli but his "Non piangere Liu" is beautifully sung, however he is on the cusp of collapse at times even though he bravely opps in for the top C in "Ti voglio ardente l'amore". I love Carrreras' voice but overall I think they should have given Bonisolli a chance to put his Calaf on disc. Freni is a fantastic Liu and Alain Lombard digs out some fine sounds from the Strasbourg Phil. It's worth getting a copy.
