Joni at Her Most Commercial
22 January 2019
I love Joni's early work :the albums Clouds, Ladies Of The Canyon, Blue and For The Roses.
I find this album more problematic. She was in a relationship with drummer John Guerin at the time and he influenced to move into a more jazzy direction. All good. Except this is almost easy listening Jazz, the type you hear on 'Smooth Radio' in South Florida.
Free Man In Paris is a great track and there are other gems here but I find the overall production and use of Joni's own voice as harmonized back up really grating.
I am aware that his is her most commercially successful album and understandably: It's very radio friendly and AOR sells well.
But if you want to hear Joni pure, closer to the flame, listen to the first five albums and then this.
All the others are immense and up there with the very best in popular music.
