Got this for my Autistic 5yo at Xmas.... It's quite difficult for a lot of kids with autism to get their head around what a joke even is, let alone what it means or why it's funny! So I thought it might be a good idea to introduce him to jokes as early as possible (and he's amazingly adaptable and positive to most things) and make him realise that not everything is black and white and one dimensional, in a fun way. And this book has literally hit the spot straight away, in fact, I've had a proper belly laugh at a couple of the jokes too. A couple of the jokes went well over his head (as I expected) but I've explained each one and why it's funny and then the next time there's a similar joke, it's helped him to see how it's intended to be a little better! It's written and illustrated in such a friendly laid-back kind of way, kudos to the author! I'm looking forward to the 'Jokes for 6 Year olds' next!
Perfect gift for my 5 year old son - he loves this book and has been enjoying trying out his new jokes on family members. There is a message from the author at the end of the book inviting children to email him their favourite jokes. My son was insistent that he wanted to do this and received a lovely personal email from Mat which he was thrilled with. My copy definitely did not have the printing errors described in another review.
I got this for my son's 5th birthday. He still needs a lot of the jokes explaining, but he's at that age when they start to get interested in jokes and he's starting to 'get' them more and more. I recently woke to find him laughing his head off at a Knock Knock joke about tennis that he'd read himself!
There's a page in the back of the book with jokes that children have sent in. We sent one of our own to the author, Mat Waugh, and were delighted to receive back a really long, friendly email, which I thought was lovely.
Can visit book again and again and gradually child understands a little more each time. She can read it but doesn't always understand why some jokes are funny and needs to practise how to tell joke. For all these reasons an excellent book
