A great start to the new series of Blake's 7 full cast audio adventures from Big Finish. This box set has four hour long stories (set during series C of the TV series). In my opinion there is one excellent story, two good stories and one poor.
My favourite is the first one - Paradise Lost - which I found to be really gripping. In addition to the usual crew we have the wonderful Hugh Fraser as the now ex-President of the Federation. A superb piece of casting. There are some really tense moments, and although we know that nothing will happen to our heroes, the writer still manages to take us on an exciting ride.
The two good stories are Resurgence and Fearless. In Resurgence the Altas and the System make a long overdue reappearance, while in Fearless Cally attempts to boost Vila's courage by fiddling around telepathically inside his head, with rather interesting results. The arrival of Servalan complicates matters.
The weakest story of the bunch is True Believers. Once again Cally is summoned telepathically by a strange entity. Cally is the only member of the regular crew who appears in this (apart from a very brief appearance by Dayna) and I had no liking, empathy or sympathy for the additional characters. It seems to me that the writer was aiming for a Tanith Lee type story, but fails in this. To be honest it all felt a bit derivative and slightly weird, and to my mind appears to be more of a Doctor Who story which has accidentally wandered into a Blake's 7 boxset.
As usual with Big Finish Blake's 7 boxsets there is an hour long Behind the Scenes disc which is fun.
So a bit of a mixed bag really, but I'm looking forward to finding out where this goes in the next boxset.
