Diffidult to get into
18 May 2019
This is quite a chunky, dense book but looked quite exciting and appealed to my 9 year-old.
Unfortunately we really struggled to get into it. It appears to be set in a semi-historical, semi-magical world but the book - being part of a series - launches straight in without much to help orientate the reader. As we hadn’t read any of the others, we found it hard to work out who the characters were and what was going on. This may be easier if you have some knowledge of Camelot as some of the names and references will sound familiar but my daughter doesn’t so this didn’t help.
We gave it a few chapters, hoping that the author was making a dynamic opening but would go back and fill in some gaps for new readers but my daughter really lost interest.
This may be a great story for people who’ve read the series but not one to read on its own.
