I first read 2000AD over thirty five years ago, and continued to read it for many years. There were many great and memorable creations but Dredd was, and is, the superlative. For various reasons he is the character we all love to follow through his battles and scrapes. Perhaps it is because he is the epitome of grey. Not a hero as such, see "America" or "Democracy Now", nor a villain, but something more human. Not a super hero, no special powers, but a man whose total belief in what he is doing has made him a force of nature. And that is very human. This movie was made on a shoe string budget, and is all the more superb for it. Great things come from small beginnings. I have a few friends who are involved in the Hollywood movie factory, and while they like the idea of Dredd as a concept, he scares them. Too grey, not black and white enough, to serious, not enough wisecracks with the violence, too British, etc etc. This film rightly ignores such excretia and delivers an excellent day in the life. Should we compare his world to ours? Don't be ridiculous, he is man of his time, just like a fan in the Colosseum 1800 years ago. He still went for his dinner afterwards, just like we do after the footy. Buy this film, it is an excellent start and was well under rated by fickle cinema goers.
