4.0 out of 5 stars Great music but..., 23 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 20 Jahre Kompakt / Kollektion 1 (Audio CD)
Well, Cologne based Kompakt are 20. No mean feat that and they have undoubtedly been one of the primary influences on underground electronic music during much of that time. As an unashamed fan with 20 or more of the albums released under the Kompakt name in my collection, how does this anniversary compiliation stack up?
First of all, and most important, the music on here is fantastic, with some stone-wall classics from the likes of Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo, Voigt & Voigt, Heiko Voss and Michael Mayer. Obviously with over well 100 releases under their belt, and a willful determination not to pigeon-hole a Kompakt 'sound', it is nigh on impossible to provide a fully comprehensive guide to all things Kompakt on just 2 CDs. However,if I had to be oversimplistic about it, CD1 is full of their more uptempo, vocal led, house based sound, whereas CD2 is more representative of the Kompakt 'pop' or ambient sound. The split isn't straightforward however, as CD2 also has some techno based tracks that wouldn't be out of place on one of the Immer mix cds, sitting alongside more straightforward pop from the likes of Gus Gus. So far so approachable; so far so fantastic.
If I do have a criticism, it is that it would have been great for a nice lavish retrospective package to be put together, a story of the label booklet with interviews with Michael Mayer and the crew. As it is, you get no information whatsoever; no list of releases; you don't even get the dates of original release next to the tracks, or what album individual tracks appeared on. This makes the overall package feel a bit of a rush job. I know this isn't the end for the label, but there would be no harm in adding a bit of personality to a package supposedly celebrating what has been a fantastic 20 years.
So, overall, get this for the music because it is a nice tribute to one of the most compelling labels in the past 20 years, but if you are a fan already don't expect to learn anything about the Kompakt label itself...thankfully for anyone curious, the music stands up for itself, and I guess that is the important thing

That's a great idea, about some sort of collectors package. Although, it seems to me that these collections are more about showing what the label is capable of and thus attracting new fans, as opposed to offering something special for existing fans.

I would like to point you in the direction of the Kompakt "fanzine" (free with any order from the Kompakt website), which tells the history of Kompakt with interviews, photographs etc. It's in the format of a newspaper. Pretty cool and well worth picking up.

Although it is difficult, in CD format, to put together anything resembling a lavish or detailed package (though the 'Mutant Disco' collections by Ze Records are always informative and interesting), I still feel the Kompakt 20 is a bit of a missed opportunity. I haven't got the 2nd Kompakt 20 disc yet so don't know if that is any different. I did get the Kompakt newspaper and agree it is definitely worth picking up; maybe a solution may have been to give it away with any sales of the CD through independent record stores or something? I picked mine up when ordering the Pachanga Boys LP through Kompakt (that is one bizarre and entertaining ride by the way)
