3.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable 3+ star update of the 1980's gem, 19 Sept. 2011

This review is from: Night of the Demons [DVD] (DVD)
*** mild spoilers ***
Having just recently watched the Night of the Demons trilogy I was interested to see how this re-imagining of the original movie worked. Although neither of the two later movies of the first tales matched the original they worked reasonably well as a very loose trilogy with Amelia Kinkade's Angela character as the lynchpin.
The start is completely different, as the back story set in 1925 New Orleans at the Broussard Mansion briefly shows, rushing straight into modern times and Halloween night and as the streets are filled with costumed merry makers celebrating a group of your regular college types get an invite from Angela Feld (Shannon Elizabeth) to a Halloween party at the old Broussard place, along with gatecrasher Colin (Edward Furlong).
As Angela encourages the revellers to lose their inhibitions the party is raided by the police leaving a group 7 inside to carry on. Exploring the house they discover some literally hidden skeletons and when one of the group is bitten the possessions start and from hereon in gets quite hectic with some decent gore scenes and effective demon make up. There's a couple of twists along the way as the cast numbers start to drop; who, if anyone, will survive?.
What raised this movie above the normal 2-3 star monster mash for me were the allusions to the original movies, from Linnea Quigley recreating her memorable appearance in the first movie, to an updated version of the "lipstick" scene albeit with added grossness and some more in your face sexy cat costumes as opposed to the tamer, albeit cuter, one Patricia Rodriguez wore in NotD3.
There's an informative 18 minute or so behind the scenes featurette and a commentary featuring Writer Director Adam Gierasch, and co-writer Jace Anderson as well as a few cast members.
Not to everyone's taste but I liked it.
